Building the Indigenous Medical Education Workforce

The LIME Network’s Reference Group has representation from all medical schools in Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand and provides advice, support and guidance to shape its work, as well as leading the development and implementation of many of its resources and activities. Medical Deans acknowledges the work of the Reference Group members and thanks them for their commitment and unstinting support.

Key to LIME’s work is the promotion and support of Indigenous medical educators, academics and research to grow this workforce and support their professional development and recognition.

This involves a range of activities from facilitating connections and information sharing between medical schools, to facilitating meetings between key stakeholders, and supporting mentoring and peer networking for students and educators.

LIME has developed the “Best Practice Approaches to Supporting Indigenous Health Academics in Medical Schools” document which recommends a range of approaches that have been found to be effective by a number of Indigenous health academics working in medical schools in Australia and New Zealand.

The LIME Good Practice Case Studies showcase examples of good practice in Indigenous health and medical education from schools and specialist colleges across Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand. The topics covered include student recruitment and support; curriculum design; teaching and learning; and community engagement.

We also host the Slice of LIME Seminars on topics related to Indigenous health and health professional education.  The seminars help to share knowledge and strengthen capacity amongst the LIME Network membership and are often co-hosted by partner universities or organisations. The seminars are often streamed live online and recorded and uploaded to YouTube for later viewing.

A suite of accreditation tools has been developed by LIME to assist medical schools in internally reviewing and mapping their Indigenous health initiatives across the areas of workforce development, student recruitment and retention, research, community partnerships, and curriculum development and implementation.

The LIME Network Resources Hub provides access to a range of publications, tools and resources to support the delivery of Indigenous health and medical education and educators.
