Research in the Curriculum

Medical Deans supports excellence in research learning in university medical programs so that:

  • all graduates understand the importance to their clinical practice of the science and research that underpins medicine
  • a cohort of graduates builds a strong foundation from which to progress along the clinician researcher training pathway, running from medical school through to post-vocational training research.

Clinician Researcher Training Pathway

Having a skilled and sufficient clinician-researcher workforce – with both health and research training – is vital to drive innovation and the delivery of high-quality healthcare. The strength of our clinician researcher workforce is currently compromised because the pathways into clinical medical research are disjointed and lack support.

Medical Deans supports the introduction of a coordinated and better supported clinician researcher career pathway, running from medical school through to post-vocational training research. The focus should be on early, preferential selection into a designated research pathway that identifies, nurtures and develops clinician researchers.

Related Community of Practice

The Research Educators Network is an extensive group of medical research professionals from member medical schools who connect to share information, experiences, ideas and resources via a dedicated Medical Deans’ Basecamp portal.
